furnish. is Green
“Green”, or environmentally friendly, has always been important to us. There are many different layers to what “green” really is and we try to be aware of that. Many of our companies are part of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, and American Leather, Lazar, and Creative Elegance were all Founding Members. American Leather has been great, making sure all their scrap leather goes to companies that make handbags and other small goods, adding increasing amounts of soy to their foam, and making their entire factory completely energy efficient. Strobel, our mattress manufacturer, makes the ONLY truly non-toxic mattress as they have created a layer system that allows them to not send the incredibly toxic flame retardant layer that every other mattress in the US is required to have. We have also started working with a local producer to create out own line of furniture with sustainable materials, and being cognizant that one of the greatest pollutants is from shipping.
Modern and green are linked in many ways. First is the concept of maximizing the function of the space being used- no waste! Second, modern lends itself to people who have put a lot of thought into what they are looking for, “thoughtful design”, much as those who are part of the green movement are cognizant of what they are using and consuming. None of our companies make “throw-away” products either. They are meant to last as long as you want them- “lifetime furniture”- so they don’t end up in the landfill, which is really the greenest concept of all!

American Leather using Renew cushioning foam
Posted at 09:09 PM November 24,2008
DALLAS — Upholstery producer American Leather has begun using Renew, an eco-friendly cushioning foam, in all of its products. The Renew foam, made of soy-based BiOH polyols, is fully recyclable and is available in various levels of firmness and densities. "We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint and adhering to sustainable manufacturing practices," said President Bruce Birnbach. "Renew recyclable foam will allow our furniture to progressively turn ‘green' while retaining our quality. This will benefit both our company and our end consumer."
